Breathing is an important part of our Pilates practice. Our inhales and exhales help us move through exercises. A deep exhale can make even the hardest of movements just a bit easier.

So what does it mean to breathe correctly at during a Pilates class?

In Pilates we try to practice lateral breathing. This is when you breathe into the sides and back of the rib cage while maintaining the contraction of the navel to spine in the core. Make sure to inhale in through the nose filling up the lungs and exhale out through the mouth silently and without any noise or tension.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts to help you in Pilates class:

– Keep it natural – it should be like blowing out a candle.
– Remind yourself to come back to your breathe when things get hard.

– Add sound effects. Ocean noises, extra sighs or any of that do nothing for you – they just distract the people around you in class.
